Notary publics in Nebraska serve an important purpose: They notarize documents for official use.

You’ll need a notary when signing documents like marriage licenses, real estate purchases, passport applications and other official documents.

Yet each state has unique laws regarding notaries and their duties, though many of them are relatively similar. Here’s what you need to know about the specific regulations for notary publics in Nebraska.

Notary Agent’s Duties

Nebraska Mobile Notaries

While verifying signatures on important documents is often the core of a notary’s business, they can perform other tasks as well – like hearing spoken oaths or creating certified copies of important documents.

But for any transaction with a notary in Nebraska, you’ll need to prove your identity. Your identification must:

  • Be government-issued, like a passport or driver’s license
  • Include your photo and signature
  • Be currently valid and not expired

The notary will verify your identity and witness your signature or oath, matching your signature on the document to that on your ID.

For certified copies, the notary will verify that the copy contains all of the information from the original and that it is clear and easy to read. Then to make your document official, the notary will apply their official ink stamp to the document and record the transaction in their ledger.

Although the state of Nebraska does allow round notary stamps, the Secretary of State’s office prefers rectangular versions. However, both are considered acceptable.

In Nebraska, notary publics must meet certain requirements, including:

  • Having the ability to serve a term of four years
  • Renewing their commission at the end of each term
  • Not having any felony convictions on their records, though misdemeanors may be permitted

The Nebraska Secretary of State maintains the right to revoke any notary’s commission at any time if need be.
