Getting Married in Maine?
Here’s What You Need to Know
Marriage Ceremony Requirements in Maine

Before saying your wedding vows, there are a few things you need to make your marriage legal.

Qualified Wedding Officiant

Maine allows couples to choose either a traditional wedding officiant or qualified notaries and legal professionals who reside in the state. The following individuals are permitted to perform weddings in Maine:

  • Ordained ministers
  • A person licensed to preach by an association of ministers, religious seminary, or ecclesiastical body
  • Judges or justices (residents of Maine only)
  • Lawyers admitted to the Maine Bar (residents of Maine only)
  • Maine notaries

Your wedding officiant will handle all the official documentation and perform the ceremony.

Marriage License

You’ll need to acquire a marriage license before the ceremony.

If you or your partner are residents of Maine, apply for the license in the city or town one of you live in. If you’re both from out of state, you can apply for your marriage license in any city in Maine.

Once it’s issued, you have 90 days to say your vows before the license expires.

Two Witnesses

  • There should be two witnesses present when you take your vows. If you’re having a big wedding with family and friends, you can ask two guests to act as witnesses. If it’s a small private wedding, be sure to invite at least two people to be your witnesses. The wedding officiant can’t be a witness. Once the ceremony is over and you’ve said your vows, the two witnesses and your Maine wedding officiant will sign the marriage license. When signing, everyone has to sign in black ink.
