A notary is an authorized individual who can notarize documents, such as deeds, wills, and contracts. This process involves verifying the identity of the individual signing the document, as well as confirming that he or she is not under any duress or coercion. The notary then signs and stamps the document, affirming its validity. This provides a higher level of assurance than simply having someone sign on their own behalf.

What You Need to Know About Remote Online Notarization in Massachusetts
On April 27, 2020, Massachusetts joined the list of US states to legalize remote notarization and witnessed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new law expressly permits electronic video conferencing used in real-time for the temporary affirmation, acknowledgment, or other notarial acts of documents.
However, the law clearly states that remote online notarization (RON) does not permit signing the documents electronically. So, ink-on-paper signatures are still required.
Each principal — or person whose signature is being notarized, including witnesses — must be physically present in Massachusetts. The notary must also be in the state of Massachusetts.
What Documents Do I Need for Remote Online Notarization in Massachusetts?
You will require the following legal documents to complete a remote online notarization with a Massachusetts mobile notary public:
- A genuine, unsigned document that must be signed with a notary public signing agent. Do not sign it yourself and upload it beforehand.
- A multimedia-capable smartphone (Android/iOS) to upload legal documents for mobile notarization. You may also use a computer or laptop for remote notarization.
- A legal photo ID issued by the government, including:
- State-issued driver’s license
- State-issued photo ID
- American Passport Book
- Authentication of American citizenship
- Certificate of naturalization
- Foreign passport
- Alien registration card with photograph which may include a green card or permanent resident card
- A US-issued social security number for safe identity verification at mobile notaries.
Massachusetts Mobile Notaries
A notary’s main purpose is to prevent fraud. This is done by witnessing the signings of very important documents and ensuring that your ID is valid (and you are who you say you are).
The full list of what they do is sizable. Here are some of the most important facts:
- To become a notary in Massachusetts, you must take an oath before you are allowed to perform your duties.
- Notary prices in Massachusetts can be as low as $1.25 to have a document notarized. However, if you are a military veteran, you may be exempt from these fees.
- Notaries public in Massachusetts are given 7-year terms where they are authorized to perform their duties.
A Notary Public in Massachusetts must also provide an ink stamp (preferably in black) or embossing seal for notarized documents. This will add more security to a document, making it harder to forge and more secure against fraud.
