Notary Agent’s Duties

South Dakota Mobile Notaries

In the state of South Dakota, a notary public serves as an impartial witness to the signature of signers on certain sensitive documents. This ensures that those signing the documents are who they say they are, which is important as a deterrent to fraud.

As such, signees will need to provide government-issued identification, such as a driver’s licence or passport.

But not just anyone can become a notary public. It requires several steps that must be conducted with the state.

Fist of all, there are certain requirements to become a notary public in South Dakota. Those include:

  • Residing in or working in South Dakota, as long as they live in a border county to the state
  • No felony convictions

If they meet these requirements, they can fill out an application, and if approved will be commissioned by the South Dakota Secretary of State for a commission of six years.

Each notary public must also take an oath before they begin notarizing documents. They will also need to acquire an ink stamp or embosser. Any document they notarize must have their seal present for the document to be considered officially notarized.
