But to do this all-important task, there are specific requirements and rules that a person must follow. Some, but not all, of these requirements or rules include:
- A notary in New Jersey cannot be convicted of any crime that involves dishonesty or a crime in the first or second degree unless the individual completes the requirements for the Rehabilitated Convicted Offenders Act.
- Notaries may not loan any of their notary equipment to anyone.
- They may not represent another person in a court proceeding.
- You may become a notary public of New Jersey even if you do not live in New Jersey provided that you do reside in an adjoining state.
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
In addition to these and other rules, all notaries must use some type of method to prove they have witnessed the signing of a document. Many states require either the ink stamp or the embosser seal, both of which provide a symbol of the notary’s signature.
However, in New Jersey, you don’t have to use either one of these.
A handwritten signature is sufficient – but the state does recommend that you use a stamp or seal, and many people request one.
