Nevada notaries perform other useful services as well, making them invaluable for businesses, the courts, and individuals across the state. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Taking acknowledgments
  • Witnessing signatures on important documents
  • Certifying copies of things like a birth certificate or a legal contract
  • Administering oaths and affirmations
  • Executing jurats (where an individual takes an oath affirming the contents of a document are correct)

Plus, in notary publics in Nevada have to have an official stamp and keep a journal of all transactions.

Not just anyone can become a notary in Nevada. There are several requirements and duties notaries public in the state have to live up to:

  • To apply, residents must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must be a US citizen or a permanent US resident who was lawfully admitted to the country.
  • Notaries must be Nevada residents or reside in a bordering state but work in Nevada.
  • No one who is a felon or who has had their notary commission revoked in Nevada or another state can become a notary in Nevada.
  • Notaries have to enter into a bond for $10,000 with the State of Nevada.

Before becoming a notary public, you’ll need to take a three-hour online training class, which is administered by the Secretary of State’s notary division. You’ll also need to pass the exam, which is based on the course. Once you meet these requirements, and you submit your application, you’ll receive a Certificate of Appointment from the secretary of state.
