A notary public in Illinois is someone who would have to be present when you are writing your signatures on very important papers. They will help determine that you are willing to sign the intended document, watch as you do so, then verify it according to Illinois law.

With the law in mind, why don’t we take a quick look at some of the other important duties a notary public in Illinois has:

  • Every notary public in Illinois who is not an attorney must make it known by stating the following: “I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN ILLINOIS AND MAY NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICE OR ACCEPT FEES FOR LEGAL ADVICE.” If the notary fails to do this, they will be fined $1000.
  • Every notary will have their own rubber stamp called an Official Seal that will authenticate whatever you want notarized.
  • For notaries to have authority to perform their duties, they must reside or work in the same county you are in.
  • Notary prices in Illinois can go up to $25 per notarization.
  • Notaries in Illinois are appointed a four-year term by the Secretary of State.
